Oil Pastel Project

Description:  We began by watching a video on the Northern Lights. We then went over different techniques for working with oil pastels. They included finger blending, hard pressure blending, light pressure blending, and blending with oil. After this, we began working on our "northern lights" background, using whichever colors, patterns, and styles we wanted. To make mine blend together better, I drew lines and blended with my finger. After that, we cut out our mountains and were free to decorate them anyway we wanted. I made mine pointed and covered them with snow. We glued our mountains on after. Extension Activity:  Students can take their Northern Lights backgrounds and create a story scene . They will write a short story or poem inspired by the northern lights, describing a magical or adventurous event that happens under the aurora borealis.
