Craft & 3D Project

 Description:

We learned about Claude Monet and his well-known Water Lily collection. First, we looked at a few of his works, then we used watercolor paint, watercolor paper, and salt to create our "water" background. We created a water-like background using green, blue, and purple, and then added extra texture with salt. We let them dry after finishing the backdrop so we could start working on the flower and lily pad. To make the flower and lily pad, we needed a white circle of paper, a pink strip of paper that was an inch thick, and green construction paper with a triangle cut off to give it a more realistic look. On the green paper, we began by creating veining and adding shading. On the white paper, we next sketched and cut out our flower. Using pencils, we wrapped the petals around it to create curls. Lastly, we sliced the paper halfway across and colored half of it orange to give the pink portion of the flower more dimension. We just wrapped it up with our fingers to spiral it. We glued the pink portion to the center of the flower, attached the flower to the lily pad, and then glued the lily pad to the water backdrop to complete the project.

Extension Activity:

Students can create a sensory water lily garden in a shoe box that incorporates the five senses: sight, sound, touch, smell, and even taste, inspired by Monet’s garden and the peaceful atmosphere it shows.
