Clay Project
Description:
We learned several methods and terms that are useful while working with clay. These included score, slip, coil, slab, and a few more terms and methods. First, we used a roller to flatten our piece of clay. Then, using a wooden tool that looked like a large toothpick, we carved out the floral pattern we had decided to make. At this point, you could either make another flower or another layer to place behind your flower, the choice is yours. After I created my flower, I decided to create another layer, so I rolled out my slab of clay once again and carved out a surface where my flower would lie. After making both of my pieces, I had to give them texture so they would stick to one another. To have our flowers create a bowl shape while drying, we laid them in a bowl. Once my piece was in the bowl, I went over the edges with water to smooth it out, and also created some last-minute designs.
Extension Activity:
Students can design and create a 3D map of local landmarks using clay. They will sculpt miniature versions of significant places, buildings, or natural features from their community, such as schools, parks, rivers, or monuments. This can tie into social studies or geography, as students will research and learn about these landmarks while applying their clay techniques.
